Josephine Sacabo: Moments of Being and Structures of Reverie

September 30, 2019 by Aline Smithson

Josephine Sacabo has been very busy, but honestly, I don’t know of a time that she hasn’t been consistently creating spectacular work and books. Her approach is mysterious, full of romance and memory, each effort bringing something unique and otherworldly to her art making. She has been a long time explorer of the world alternative and historical techniques, using multiple layers to create a single ethereal image. Josephine is skilled printmaker whose signature process, photogravure, “heightens the mystery and otherworldly romance of her images. Moments of Being continues her career-long artistic exploration of the intersections between body and soul, past and present, thought and feeling.”

On October 3rd, she will open an exhibition at A Gallery for Fine Photography, Moments of Being, that runs through January 4th, 2020. The exhibition will be a collection of twenty, 25 1/2 x 20″ hand-pulled photogravures printed on Sekishu Tsuru tissue. In addition, Josephine will be signing copies of Structures of Reverie, first published last year as a very limited, handmade luxury edition book and is now releasing a trade version. The book is Hardcover, 10 x 12 1/2 inches, 60 pages, 28 photographs including two double-page foldouts, Published by Luna Press 2019.

Josephine Sacabo divides her time between New Orleans and Mexico—both places inform her work, resulting in imagery that is as startling and surreal as the places she calls home. Using alternative and traditional techniques, her photography has been featured in gallery and museum exhibitions in the U.S., Europe and Mexico. Sacabo has been the recipient of multiple awards and is included in the permanent collections of the George Eastman House, the International Center of Photography, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and la Bibliothéque Nationale, Paris, France.

Moments of Being

“What would such an inexperienced soul do without the solution that a body had been.”  – Clarice Lispector

Snapshots of the life within.

Echoes of thought and feelings expressed in the only terms I really understand, which are those of light and shadow and the softening of edges.

The things expressed have already happened. Here they are remembered tenderly, in the repose of passion.   – Josephine Sacabo
