We have work to do

June 8, 2020 by Aline Smithson

We have been quiet this past week as we deeply consider the profoundly devastating loss of so many Black lives – most recently George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and Ahmaud Arbery. Many voices have eloquently spoken out against these tragedies, and we felt it was best they be allowed to be heard.

This is a time for reflecting, for learning, and most importantly, for change. As a team, we are committed to taking the necessary actions within our own organization. We will be establishing new initiatives dedicated to inclusion and equity in the hopes of providing an even more diverse platform reflective of the vast array of voices in our community. There is much work to be done in dismantling the systematically exclusionary practices that are present in photographic institutions and organizations, and we resolve to be a part of the way forward.

Our initial action plans are as follows:

• To create a socially conscious reading, audio, and viewing resource list for photographers, educators, and students. We are creating the Lenscratch Library under our Resources tab. If you have materials to share, please send to: lenscratch2@gmail.com

• We are seeking a diverse group of editors and/or researchers to add to our team. If this is an opportunity you are interested in or know someone who would be a good fit, we are accepting applications here.

• We are in the process of establishing an Award for BIPOC photographers which will financially support and amplify meaningful projects. More on this soon.

These are simply first steps. We are committed to creating a more diverse and equitable platform and are open and eager to hear suggestions or to receive critical feedback so that we may be part of the solution in combating racial injustice. Our email and direct messages are always open – we look forward to working alongside you. Thank you for supporting the Lenscratch platform and for being a valued part of our community.

In solidarity,
Aline Smithson and The Lenscratch Team
